APBT CONFORMATION STANDARD

breed_standard_ots.jpg

Game Bred American Pit Bull Terriers in comparison to the
huge, stocky, heavy boned, massive head of the so called
Bully bred dogs is like comparing a Ferrari to a dump truck.
These so called Bully bred dogs should be classified as a totally
different breed of dog (like the American Pit Bull Terrier and
the American Staffordshire Terrier), they are so different from
what a true bred American Pit Bull Terrier is and should be, that
it hard to believe that they can still be classified as American
Pit Bull Terriers. These so called Bully dogs are being bred by
totally different standards than that of the American Pit Bull
Terrier. One has only to look at the standards of the breed to
understand the point that's being made here.

Colby's Primo was chosen to be the first standard for the
American Staffordshire Terrier for the American Kennel Club.
Both American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire
Terriers were once the same breed (hence the standard being
based on a Colby dog). However, due to selective breeding
over the years they have been bred to different standards
resulting in many people recognizing them as two distinct
breeds. Another view on this is that one is a working strain
(APBT) with the other being a show variant (AST). the APBT
and AST were mainly bred from UK and Irish Pit dogs which
later became known as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the UK.

The Game Bred dogs have always been well respected for their
temperament, gameness and conformation, making them the
ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier. Unlike the modern stereo type
of a APBT, Game Bred dogs were not huge with massive heads -
in fact they are fit, well muscled but still agile dogs that are capable
of a full days work. Their influencing factors are temperament,
gameness and ability, with the emphasis on gameness being high on
the list. Knowingly or unknowingly, the standards have taken a backseat,

especially in the American Pit Bull Terrier where most
current breeders are producing dogs not resembling the original
standards at all!
